Frequently Asked Questions

The Rugby Universe

What is The Rugby Universe?
The Rugby Universe is a coaching organisation dedicated to developing young people through rugby and sport. We use rugby’s core values — respect, teamwork, humility, discipline, and resilience — to help children grow as players and as people.

Who runs The Rugby Universe?
We were founded by Corné du Rand, a former professional rugby player and RFU Level 3 coach, supported by a passionate team of franchisees and qualified, child-focused coaches.

What ages do you work with?
We deliver programmes for children and youth players aged 18 months to 19 years, tailored to each stage of development.

Do you only teach rugby?
No — while rugby is at our heart, we also offer multi-sport sessions to build movement, coordination, and confidence through play.

What makes your coaching unique?
Our approach is person-centred and values-driven. We focus on developing confident, resilient young people — not just better players. Our sessions are structured, fun, and inclusive for all abilities but also provide further development and performance coaching.

Are your coaches qualified and DBS checked?
Yes. All rugby coaches are qualified, DBS checked, and trained in child safeguarding, first aid, and inclusive coaching methods.

What is Tiny Tacklers?
Tiny Tacklers is our early years rugby and movement programme, introducing children to sport through fun games that develop coordination, balance, confidence, and teamwork.

Do children need to have played rugby before?
Not at all! Tiny Tacklers is designed for complete beginners — we teach fundamental movement and ball skills that prepare children for all sports.

Do parents join in?
Yes! Especially in the younger age groups, parent participation is encouraged. It’s part of what we call the Tiny Tacklers Family Affect — learning together and bonding through play.
